Choosing auxiliary lights for an off-road vehicle starts not with wattage or price, but with a simple question: where and how do you drive at night? A fast gravel road, a technical mountain trail and a camp site need different light. Below are the main parameters to look at, with examples from the RIGID catalog.

1. Beam pattern: the most important choice
The beam pattern determines where the light goes. RIGID lights come with several beam types:
- Spot — a narrow, long-range beam for higher speeds and long straights: it reaches far ahead but lights little to the sides;
- Flood — a wide beam close to the vehicle: for slow technical trails, work around the vehicle and camp;
- Driving — a balance between spot and flood: good reach plus some width, a versatile choice for the road and fast tracks;
- Spot/Flood Combo — spot optics in the center of the light bar and flood at the edges, so one bar covers both distance and width;
- Diffused — soft, even light without hot spots, for work, scene and ditch lighting;
- Hyperspot — the most concentrated beam for maximum reach.
A simple rule: the faster you drive, the more spot you need; the slower and more technical the terrain, the more flood.
2. Form factor: pods, round lights or a light bar
- Pods — compact lights such as the 3-inch D-Series PRO or the SR-Q and SR-M Series PRO. They go in the bumper and on the A-pillars, usually in pairs.
- Round lights — the 360-Series in 4, 6 and 9 inch sizes, with a classic look and options with amber light and RGBW backlight.
- Light bars — SR-Series PRO, E-Series PRO, Radiance and Adapt bars from 10 to 50 inches, and RDS-Series PRO up to 54 inches, for the roof or bumper. Adapt bars change their beam pattern automatically depending on speed.

3. White or amber light
White light gives maximum visibility. Amber reflects less off dust, rain, fog and snow and is easier on the eyes on long night drives. RIGID offers both: amber PRO lenses, such as the SR-Series 20 Inch Spot Amber PRO, and amber covers for round lights, such as the 360-Series 6 Inch Cover Amber PRO Pair

4. Where to mount
- Bumper — a light bar or a pair of pods; low mounting works well in fog and dust and gives no glare off the hood;
- A-pillars — pods that light the sides of the trail and the inside of turns (ditch lights);
- Roof — maximum reach for a long light bar; check that the light does not reflect off the hood;
- Rear — reverse and work lights, plus the rear-facing Chase bar that keeps you visible to vehicles behind you in dust;
- Under the body — rock lights for crawling over rocks at night;
- Vehicle-specific kits — for example, the SAE fog light kit for Toyota Tundra, Sequoia, Tacoma and 4Runner or the Jeep Wrangler JL hood mounts for the Adapt 20 Inch bar
5. Wiring and voltage
Most RIGID lights in our catalog are rated for 9–36 V, so they suit both 12 V cars and 24 V trucks. Always connect auxiliary lights through a harness with a relay, fuse and switch, for example the Radiance Bar Multi-Trigger Wire Harness with two independent circuits. Check the current draw on the product page: for instance, the SR-Series PRO 10 Inch Spot/Flood Combo draws 4.29 A at 14 V.
6. On the road and off the road
Powerful spot beams and long light bars are made for off-road use: switch them off when there is oncoming traffic so you don’t blind other drivers. For public roads, look at the SAE Series: fog lights and other lights built to the SAE standard for on-road use.

Quick picks
- Fast gravel roads and night highway: a spot or driving light bar on the roof or bumper — SR-Series PRO, Adapt;
- Mountains, forest, technical trails: a combo bar plus flood or driving pods on the A-pillars — D-Series PRO;
- Fog, dust, rain: amber light and SAE fog lights;
- Work and camp: diffused or flood pods and scene lights.
